GOLDBOX-7 for GoldMine 7.x, 8.0x, 8.5x, Premium Edition ®
BEFORE PURCHASE:
Please install GX7DEMO.EXE (below), configure it and run some test operations on ACTUAL GoldMine Database upon which GoldBox-7 will operate! Please do not configure GoldBox for a TEST GoldMine system.
NOTE:
For OLDER releases of GoldMine (earlier than 7.x), you need GoldBox-5 or GoldBox-SQL here.
BDE ADMINISTRATOR:
Q: Why is GoldBox-7 called "the BEST GoldBox ever"?
A: Much of the older, obsolete technology was removed, making the EXEs more efficient, faster loading and running. New capabilities in Org Chart generation, GoldBox Views and other improvements were added during the design of GoldBox-7. The interface is also improved. Please compare GoldBox-SQL to the newer GoldBox-7:
Q: On the above GXSQL screen are 8 fixed buttons along the top. Where are they in GoldBox-7?
A: The less-used Setup screen options are accessed in GoldBox-7 by right-clicking anywhere on the screen, then selecting from the pop-up menu. The other area of GoldBox-7 with a pop-up menu is at Field Mapping for IMPORT / UPDATE. Access by right-clicking anywhere on the Mapping Template.
Q: What is different about installing GoldBox-7?
A: GoldMine 7.x / 8.x / Premium Edition breaks from previous versions and does not use the BDE Administrator. GoldBox-7 still requires the BDE Administrator. You MUST have the BDE properly installed and configured BEFORE you download the GoldBox-7 DEMO.
Q: Does GoldBox-7 handle GoldMine Premium Edition?
A: Yes. GoldBox-7 auto-senses whether you have GoldMine 7.x, 8.0x or 8.5x, and adjusts itself automatically.
Q: How do I install the BDE Administrator?
A: The executable is BDEADMIN.EXE, in its own folder with other BDE files and DLLs. The BDE may already be on your system. If so, please use that version. If you have a DEMO installer for GoldMine 6.x, you may be able to install the BDE Administrator that way. Otherwise, download this file, BDEInfoSetup.zip and install.
Q: Should I consider the BDE Administrator "ready to use" after installing?
A: Almost - but NO. You MUST access it and verify some key settings. Pleas review this information as a guide for configuring the BDE Administrator.
Q: Are there BASIC and PRO editions of GoldBox-7?
A: No. GoldBox-7 is only a "Professional" edition, at a single price, with no special upgrade price. GoldBox-7 is $395 USD, regardless of whether you have a previous GoldBox release. The same copy will work on GoldMine data hosted in MSSQL (recommended), or in Firebird.
Q: We have GoldMine 7 configured for Microsoft SQL Server 2005. Is that a problem?
A: If you are using Microsoft SQL Server 7 or Microsoft SQL Server 2000, you can use the native MSSQL database driver at the BDE Administrator. If you are on the newer Microsoft SQL Server 2005, you should NOT use the native MSSQL driver in the BDE Administrator, but should use an ODBC driver instead. Make sure you set it up as a SYSTEM DSN. Typically, a BDE Alias is auto-created at the same time. You must access the BDE, right-click the alias and SAVE AS to a new name! Hard Rule: A BDE alias name and the original Database name MUST BE different!
Q: We have GoldBox-SQL for GoldMine hosted in MSSQL. Can we transfer Setups and Q-files?
A: Yes. First, ensure GoldBox-SQL is on version 2008-A or later. Then, access the Help menu option and run the conversion procedure. Essentially this copies out your setups to a GX7TRANS sub-folder under GoldBox-SQL. You must then access that sub-folder and create a zip file on its contents named GX7TRANS.ZIP. Place that file in the GoldBox-7 root folder for assimilation.
If you access GoldBox-SQL at a later time - after converting to GoldMine 7 or Premium Edition - you may get an error because GoldBox-SQL won't be able to find the GM6S32.DLL file. Therefore, how to access and run the Saved Setups Transfer to GX7, under its Help menu? You can get around this by loading the GXQ.EXE with a single parameter of GX7TRANSFER following the call to the executable. Perhaps place this command under the Run menu in Windows. Such a call might look like this:
c:\gxsql\gxq.exe gx7transfer
The parameter is not case-sensitive. When GXQ.EXE loads, it will take you directly to the Transfer operation.
Q: We have GoldBox-5, for GoldMine hosted in dBase. Can we transfer Setups and Q-files?
A: No - except for GoldBox Views, ODBC/SQL Convert to dBase and Mirror Updates. In other words, only SQL-based operations. This is the same rule that applied when going from GoldBox-5 to GoldBox-SQL, years ago. GoldBox-5 is optimized for speed and efficiency to work directly upon dBase data, whereas GoldBox-SQL and GoldBox-7 are optimized to work upon SQL / ODBC data. Under the hood, the code is different. Therefore, operations such as Imports, Exports, Global Replaces and so forth will not transfer.
Q: I get an error when loading GoldBox-7 as "Unable to load GM7S32.DLL". How to fix?
Possible Solution #1: Put the path to GoldMine's EXE (which is also where GM7S32.DLL should be) in the Path Environment variable. To do this:
Go to the START menu.
Right-click on My Computer, then select Properties.
Select the Advanced tab.
Click the Environment Variables button.
In the alphabetically sorted System variables list, scroll to PATH and highlight.
Click Edit button.
In the box, Variable value prompt, key in the GoldMine path (Drive Letter and Folder), making sure to preserve the other paths. If other paths follow it, end your entry with a semi-colon;
Click OK.
Possible Solution #2: Go into GoldMine, then select File / Configure / License Manager. Click tab called "Install Locally". Provide the folder name for the install.
Q: What was left out of the newer GoldBox-7?
A: The following features or operations are NOT in GoldBox-7, all superseded:
Old Technology Import/Update (covered by Newer GXI Technology).
DNC Phone Scrub operation (covered by more versatile DNCscan() function and new compressed phone number parser).
Groups-by-Break (covered by more versatile 'plug-in' of Group Membership found at Import/Update of Main Contacts).
Org Chart Creator (covered by newer Virtual Org Chart creator in GoldBox Views, with Preview, optional write to GoldMine, and ability to auto-launch from Q-file script).
VLink2MSSQL() (covered by more versatile VLinkByQuery() function).
User Input from Q-file. Covered entirely by much more versatile GoldBox Views, which is also multi-user aware (User Input was not). The GXinput() function is still used for DDE macro capture in GoldBox Views for GoldMine, and for storage of variables.
Q: How do I install GoldBox-7?
A: Download and install GX7DEMO.EXE but only AFTER the BDE Administrator is configured.
Q: How do I purchase GoldBox-7?
A: Purchase ONLY after you have verified that the DEMO is installed correctly and properly configured! Suggest running a Merge-Purge COUNT Mode as a test. Once you are satisfied with the demo's operation, you are ready to purchase. If you are working with a GoldBox VAR, please purchase through their company. If you are purchasing directly, go to:
